Markham. Vol I - xlv, 295 pp. Vol II - xiii, pp 296 - 551. The Natural and Moral History of the Western Indies by Acosta is considered to be a valuable work for two reasons. It contains an exposition of the ideas of learned men of the sixteenth century on physical geography, and it is one of the leading authorities on the ancient civilisations of Peru and Mexico. Both vols - some spots of foxing on prelims and a little intermittently in text. Binding tight. Many pages unopened. Yellow eps. Bound in blue cloth boards of the Hakluyt Society with gilt lettering on spines. Gilt vignette of the sailing ship 'Victoria' on front covers. Blindstamp decoration on boards. Boards bright. Spines somewhat darkened. Overall condition VG. |
