A collection of rhymes, each accompanied by a humorous line drawing illustration, also by Lear. Edward Lear (1812-1888) worked under the patronage of the Earl of Derby to whose grandchildren he dedicated his first Book of Nonsense (1845) - "Nonsense, pure and absolute, having been my aim throughout". "There was a Young Person of Bantry, Who frequently slept in the pantry; When disturbed by the mice, She appeased them with rice, That judicious young person of Bantry". Professionally recased with original boards and spine. Boards and spine in VG condition. New eps only. Decorative hard paper boards with humorous drawing on front board. Dark brown cloth spine with bright gilt lettering and band of decorative gilt at top and bottom. Edges of boards and corners lightly rubbed. Top and bottom of spine lightly rubbed. Foxing on half-title page and occasional spots in text (mainly confined to plates at beginning and end of volume). Overall condition VG. A scarce first edition of Lear's third book.
