| Description: | 28 pp pamphlet. The Wakes is a private museum administered by the Oates memorial Trust. The Wakes was a private house until 1953. In 1954 an appeal was launched in The Times for funds to enable the house and grounds to be purchased and endowed as a perpetual memorial to Gilbert White, the 18th century clergyman-naturalist and author of The Natural History and Antiquities of Selborne, who lived most of his life in the house. The property was purchased with a donation from Mr Robert washington Oates. The Wakes was opened as a museum in 1955. The collections are therefore in two parts: those relating to Gilbert White and Selborne, and those of the Oates family. Line drawing illustrations by J.Y. Streeter.
