Description: 28 pp pamphlet. The Wakes is a private museum administered by the Oates memorial Trust. The Wakes was a private house until 1953. In 1954 an appeal was launched in The Times for funds to enable the house and grounds to be purchased and endowed as a perpetual memorial to Gilbert White, the 18th century clergyman-naturalist and author of The Natural History and Antiquities of Selborne, who lived most of his life in the house. The property was purchased with a donation from Mr Robert washington Oates. The Wakes was opened as a museum in 1955. The collections are therefore in two parts: those relating to Gilbert White and Selborne, and those of the Oates family. Line drawing illustrations by J.Y. Streeter. Cream paper covers with illustration of swallow on wire on front. Overall condition near Fine.
