With 9 colour plates "English Banners at Crecy". 8 x 11.25 inches. The author has selected the expedition of Edward III to Normandy in 1346, not only from the intrinsic interest of the story, and the light it throws on the military methods of the period, but also from the eccentric nature of the undertaking, which, concieved as it was against every principle of the military art, yet met with no mishap, and was eventually carried out to a triumphant conclusion in the face of great difficulties and against enormous odds. From the Memoranda Rolls of the Exchequer has been extracted the writs of exoneration from the assessment for finding men-at-arms and archers, and upwards of 800 Knights and Esquires who served with the King in France in 1346 and 1347. Of the Earls or Barons who displayed banners at Crecy, three only have left decendants in the male line - Talbot ( Earl of Shrewsbury), Willoughby , and West (Earl De la Warr). Of the thousands of Knights and Esquires which figure in these pages, the following have left decendants in the male line, who are still numbered among the Peers or landed gentry of England and Ireland - Scudamore, Clavering, Davenport, Howard, Bedingfield, Wrottesley, Colville, Dawnay, Fairfax, Burton now Denison, Spencer, Radcliffe, Blount, Kendall, Wake, Lumley, Grey, Bagot, Burdet, Selby, Seymour, Barnardiston, Rodney, Corbet, Ferrers, Farnham, St. John, Wingfield, Sandford, Cornewall, Heigham, Curzon, Carew, Bracebrigge, Salvin, Langton now Massingberd, Harley, Hotham, Wake, Bacon, Baskerville now Glegg, Upton now Smyth, Cavendish, De Hoghton, Lingen now Burton, Clifton, Devereux, Welby, Berkeley, Berney, Wykeham, Briscoe, Hesketh of Rufford, Dymoke, Clinton, St. George.
